BENELUX Stands Out in ESG Best Practices

The Netherlands demonstrates environmental concerns above the European Union average, with many companies already standing out in adopting ESG criteria (Environment, Social, and Governance).

Featured in international Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) rankings and indicators, the Benelux markets showcase examples of best practices and opportunities for Portuguese companies.

The Benelux markets – Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg – have played a prominent role in adopting ESG strategies, programs, and initiatives, involving companies, business associations, clusters, competitiveness hubs, university-business interface institutions, universities, among others. This region, known for its solid business economic foundation and commitment to sustainability, has embraced business strategies and government policies that promote environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and transparency in management.

If we analyze some international indicators and rankings in these areas, we observe the international relevance of the Benelux markets, whether in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2023 (5th position Netherlands; 10th position Belgium; 25th position Luxembourg), the European Innovation Scoreboard 2023 (Belgium and Netherlands considered “Innovation Leaders,” and Luxembourg as a “Strong Innovator”), the Environmental Performance Index 2022 (6th position Luxembourg; 11th position Netherlands; 21st position Belgium), or the Social Progress Index 2022 (7th position Netherlands; 14th position Luxembourg; 16th position Belgium).
